ATMOSPHERE: A LOVE STORY by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Atmosphere: A Love Story is about a woman training to be one of the first female astronauts in the 1980s. You would think it would be about space, but it isn’t really. It’s actually about what it means to be human and the joy of finding your place in the universe. Yes, there are rockets, training, and hella-cool, super-radical astronaut stuff, but the heart of the book is an exploration of all the relationships the main character can have: mother, daughter, aunt, romantic partner, friend, colleague—and how they shape her journey.

It’s engaging, funny, romantic, heartbreaking, and surprisingly light on its feet. Think of it as a CBS drama: expertly crafted, easy to enjoy, not trying to be HBO—and that's a good thing. There's at least one stripper in this story and references to milkshakes that will make you open up DoorDash or whip out your blender. It’s a cool story, and we all want the main character to be our aunt.

This book is emotional cheese: rich, indulgent, and maybe even a little too much at times—but delicious all the same. AND WHO DOESN’T LIKE CHEESE?! Jenkins Reid has crafted a solid, satisfying (beach?) read that might just sneak up on you and make you cry at least once… or compel you to get your pilot’s license… eat more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches… or whip out a telescope… take your pick.
