Who would have known that “Big Swinging Dick” was a technical term?

This first book by Michael Lewis is a fun and fascinating dive into the hyper masculine world of stock trading and the insane lifestyle of excess that follows when people’s whole job is to take money, make more from betting and lying, and rinse and repeat.

Reading this book for the descriptions of the meals alone is worth the entertainment value but its true contribution to society is as an honest time capsule of the last time that stock trading was mostly done by humans with humans. A picture of a time when the global financial system was truly a massive game of poker more defined by the flaws and subterfuge of what it means to be a person than the cold algorithms that drive most of today’s trading. It goes by quickly in a great way and entertains while also opening the door to optional deeper thoughts and considerations, if you want to explore them.

This book will not make you better at investing so allow us to give you some advice: don’t invest in individual stocks, buy low cost index funds, and read this book.
