Only the Irish would call something as tense and violent at the Troubles, “The Troubles”, but here we are talking about them so I guess branding works.
This fascinating first-hand account of the nuances of terrorism and resistance on the emerald isle is riveting and realistic. This book is a lot less action movie and a lot more horror film. The two most shocking things in this book are 1) actually how low the murder rate was compared to what we all thought it would be and 2) the wonton way parents would just let their kids run their own lives in such an explosive atmosphere.
The subtlety of this book is something beautiful. It expertly navigates all the moral gray zones of this complicated time in history without exaggerating events or shying away from the significant damage that comes for the persistent threat of death around every corner.
