I’ve got trauma, you’ve got trauma, we’ve all got trauma. Fuck! What now?!?

Trauma impacts each of us in many different ways, often without our awareness. It’s not just your brain that suffers; it’s also your body. The central point of this book is that your past unaddressed traumas are affecting your present, whether you are aware of it or not. These traumas shape our behaviors and our physical health in measurable ways and we ignore them at our own peril.

It was fascinating to learn about emerging trauma treatments beyond drugs and current wide-spread practices ranging from EMDR and Family Systems Therapy to yoga and acting. That being said, the book is perhaps about 10% too long and gets a little “hey, why aren’t people paying attention to me?” at some points.

This book is a hard read in that it touches on a lot of difficult topics that you don’t normally talk about casually — it’s work, but like most worthwhile things, it’s a good investment of your time. Some readers reported new personal insights, sudden access to repressed memories, improvements in their romantic relationships, and increased empathy towards others as a result of this book. One person said this might be one of the most important books for new parents to read, while others found sections deeply disturbing. Nonetheless, all of us found it useful and it sparked some of the most vulnerable conversations we have had in our book club. Read this book but, only if you’re ready.
