Supermarkets are fucked up, magical, impressive, ordinary places. This book will blow your mind, throw your heart in a landfill, and help you complicate your relationship with that old frenemy: global capitalism.
This book is written in a fast paced first-hand style that makes it easy to read, engaging, approachable, and perversely fun in parts. The vocabulary in this book is second only to Bourdain and the skillful mixing and first-person experiences with historical context is like literary BDSM. The rainbow of actors who participate in the complex ballet of growing and harvesting food, turning it into products, getting it to a store, and configuring that store so you buy a product is astounding and horrifying all the same.
We all loved this book and no-one has ever looked at a seafood counter, truckers, or a wide-mouthed Gatorade bottle, the same way again. If you eat food you should read this book.
