THE WAGER by David Grann

This book is a ride but not in the way you are expecting. Reading it is like reading a story in 3 acts where each act is published by a different TV channel.

ACT1: National Geographic, ACT II: History Channel, ACT III: Bravo.

There are moments in this book that feel like reading an encyclopedia article about ships while others feel ripped directly from the pages of season 57 of “General Hospital” with a little bit of “Naked And Afraid” mixed in for good measure.

What’s weird about this book is that it is simply the latest in a long line of books about this event that have been published at irregular intervals for the last 280 years. And like the “Fast and Furious” series, it feels like each author keeps trying to put their own spin on the events, trying to get the same story just right.

If you like history, interesting factoids, or ships you will probably love this book. If you like learning about how insane you have to be to gamble with your life in a business with a mortality rate above 50% you will probably like this book. But if you’re not into any of that stuff then you should skip this book. No press gangs here.
